THE GIDEONS INTERNATIONAL (TGI) ESV SCRIPTURE MEMORY COURSE
The value of committing Scripture to one's mind is great, both for personal spiritual growth and for advancing the Kingdom of God. The Lord has given us a gracious promise in John 14:26, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."
If you are among those who have a hard time memorizing Scripture, try beginning in prayer, claiming His promise to reveal His Word to you and hide it in your heart. In 1937, we published our first Guide Book. In it was written, "As Gideons, we know from experience how important in soul winning is the Word of God. We are placing Bibles because they save souls. We have hundreds of testimonies to prove so. Yet, how many of us have equipped ourselves with memorized Scripture so we can easily lead men to Christ? Without the living and powerful Word of God at tongue's end, we will be helpless. Let us arm ourselves with the truth."
In today's world of computers and mobile devices, Scripture memorization is not emphasized as much as it once was. Author Chuck Swindoll states, "There is no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding than memorizing Scripture." He believes your prayer life will be strengthened and your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective.
You cannot see what God is doing apart from reading His Word. A great verse to start out memorizing is 2 Timothy 2:15, which says, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."
The Gideons International provides a Scripture Memory Course available in the store on theConnection (Item 404). This memory course was introduced in the 1940s, and it still works today.
INTRODUCTION TO "KEY VERSES"
These verses are five key passages of the Scripture Memory Course, one for each of the five major groups of ten verses. Each will explain and define its respective group.
INTRODUCTION TO VERSES ON "THE GOSPEL"
The ten verses included in GROUP 1 center on the penalty of sin, the Good News of Jesus Christ, God's plan of salvation, and the assurance of redemption.
INTRODUCTION TO VERSES ON "ANSWERS"
Unbelievers often counter a presentation of the Gospel with excuses. A ready answer from God's Word is the best way to overcome an objection preventing a person from receiving Christ. Ten common excuses are Scripturally answered in the verses of GROUP 2.
INTRODUCTION TO VERSES ON "THE CHRISTIAN LIFE"
There are many things to occupy the life of a Christian, but all should relate to the life of Christ. GROUP 3 includes characteristics key to living a Christ-like life.
INTRODUCTION TO VERSES ON "FRUIT"
Marvelous verses to know are those concerning the fruits of the Spirit. Infinitely more marvelous it is to see the actual cultivation and growth of this fruit in your own life. Pray as you memorize the verses in GROUP 4 for the words to become realities in your own life.
INTRODUCTION TO VERSES ON "PROMISES"
It is through God's amazing promises we become partakers of the grace of God. These ten promises in GROUP 5 are chosen out of many thousands.
