Books of the Bible

William Tyndale, an English biblical scholar and translator, played a pivotal role in making the Bible accessible to English speakers. His commitment to translating Scripture into English ultimately led to his execution for heresy on October 6, 1536.

Thanks to Tyndale’s work—alongside the invention of the printing press by Gutenberg—we can read and memorize Scripture in English today. To locate a verse efficiently, it’s essential to understand its “coordinates,” beginning with the name of the book.

Rather than relying on the table of contents each time, you can save time by memorizing the order of the books of the Bible. While this may seem overwhelming at first, there are simple strategies that make it much more manageable.

The Bible contains 66 books, organized both by timeline and literary style. The Old Testament, written before Christ’s birth, includes 39 books. The New Testament, written during and after His life, contains 27.

Literarily, the Old Testament is divided into five sections: the Law (Pentateuch), History, Poetry, Major Prophets, and Minor Prophets. The New Testament is divided into four: the Gospels, Church History, Epistles (letters to churches), and Prophecy.

By learning these sections and committing the sequence of books to memory, you’ll be able to locate any passage quickly and confidently.
