1 Samuel 8:4-5, 7, 19-20nasb
38
Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah;
and they said to him, "Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations."
Then the Lord said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them.
Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, "No, but there shall be a king over us,
that we also may be like all the nations, that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles." -
Ex. 34:6-7esv
48 Law and Grace
(For I am), "Yahweh, Yahweh, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty."
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. -
Ezekiel 36:22-27esv
47 New Covenant promised
"Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord Yahweh:
It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.
And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them.
And the nations will know that I am Yahweh , declares the Lord Yahweh, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land.
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules." -
Gen. 12:1-3, 15:5-6, 1 Chron 1:34ESV
24 Abrahamic covenant
Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.
And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them."
Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
And Abraham became the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac were Esau and Israel. -
Gen. 2:16-17ESV
16 the fall
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,
"You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,
for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." -
Gen. 3:15ESV
23 the curse and promise
Then the Lord God said to the serpent "
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel." -
Gen. 3:4-6ESV
16 the fall
But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.
For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened,
and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,
and that it was a delight to the eyes,
and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,
she took of its fruit and ate,
and she also gave some to her husband who was with her,
and he ate. -
Genesis 1:1-4ESV
11 creation
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. -

15 creation of man
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea
and over the birds of the heavens
and over the livestock
and over all the earth
and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. -

40 Israel's harlotry
For a spirit of harlotry has led them astray,
And they have played the harlot, departing from their God.
Their deeds will not allow them to return to their God. For a spirit of harlotry is within them, and they do not know the Lord. -
Jer 31:31-34ESV
44 New Covenant promised
"Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt,
my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people;
they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.
For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." -
Jeremiah 3:6-7, 9nasb
40 Israel's harlotry
Then the Lord said to Jeremiah in the days of Josiah the king, "Have you seen what faithless Israel did? She went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and she was a harlot there.
I thought, 'After she has done all these things she will return to Me'; but she did not return. She polluted the land and committed adultery with stones and trees." -

they poured out innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters. -

35
Then he gave them into the hand of the nations,
so that those who hated them ruled over them.
Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.
Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
when he heard their cry.
For their sake he remembered his covenant,
and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. -

they lied to him with their tongues. -
Rom.1:22-25, Gen 3:7ESV
19 the fall
Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God
for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity,
to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie
and worshiped and served the creature
rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever!
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. -
Rom. 3:9-18, 23ESV
43 Man's depravity
What then? Are we better than they?
Not at all: for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
as it is written:
"None is righteous, no, not one;
no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one."
"Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive."
"The venom of asps is under their lips."
"Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness."
"Their feet are swift to shed blood;
in their paths are ruin and misery,
and the way of peace they have not known."
"There is no fear of God before their eyes."
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. -
Rom. 8:20, Gen 6:5ESV
20 the fall
For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope.
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
