Nature of the Sacrament of the Altar

It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink.

Nature of the Sacrament of the Altar

The holy Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. Paul write:Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Benefit of the Sacrament of the Altar

These words, “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins,” show us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.

Power of the Sacrament of the Altar

Certainly not just eating and drinking do these things, but the words written here: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” These words, along with the bodily eating and drinking, are the main thing in the Sacrament. Whoever believes these words has exactly what they say: “forgiveness of sins.”

How to receive this Sacrament worthily

Fasting and bodily preparation are certainly fine outward training. But that person is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.”
But anyone who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, for the words “for you” require all hearts to believe.

Gospel

In the Gospel, the good news of our salvation in Jesus Christ, God gives forgiveness, faith, life, and the power to please Him with good works.

Law

A. First, the Law helps to control violent outbursts of sin and keeps order in the world (a curb).
B. Second, the Law accuses us and shows us our sin (a mirror).
C. Third, the Law teaches us Christians what we should and should not do to lead a God-pleasing life (a guide). The power to live according to the Law comes from the Gospel.

Law

In the Law God commands good works of thought, word, and deed and condemns and punishes sin.

Indwelling of the Word

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Divine Gentleness

a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.

Seed of the Word

To Us a Child is Born

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them a light shone. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

A New Commandment

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

Plan for Salvation

but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Words are Life

The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Free Indeed

Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. ...So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Great Commission

Word is our Guide

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your word.

God's Pure Word

The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times.

Confidence in God

Divine Protector

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ...One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.

Powerful Word

For the word of the Lord is upright and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

God is Omnipotent

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

Purpose of the Word

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Law as a Mirror

Through the law comes knowledge of sin.
