The gospel message can be illustrated systematically as a cross that spans two cliffs like a bridge, just like St. Catherine of Siena envisioned (The Dialogue, 21). The cliff on the left represents the state of mankind– All Have Sinned, and Sin's Penalty. The cross-bridge represents the gift of salvation– Christ Paid the Penalty, and Unmerited Salvation.
